Wales has a legal right to wild camp on most open land, one of very few places in England and Wales where this is permitted. For motorcycle tourers this opens up a world of possibilities: lightweight camping gear, remote overnight spots, and the freedom to sleep exactly where the ride takes you.

What You Need

Keep weight down. A compact one-person tent, a three-season sleeping bag that compresses small, and a lightweight roll mat are the core kit. Cook on a small gas stove and carry water purification tablets. Modern motorcycle dry bags and tail packs are well suited to camping kit.

The Best Areas

The Elan Valley, the Cambrian Mountains, and the moorlands above the Brecon Beacons are all excellent wild camping areas. Look for high ground with good drainage, away from farm buildings and livestock. Leave no trace.

Practical Tips

Always check the weather forecast the night before. Welsh mountain weather moves fast. Tell someone where you are going, arrive with enough daylight to set up, and always carry a small first aid kit. Waking up to a mountain sunrise with your bike parked outside the tent is one of the most rewarding travel experiences in the UK.
